4e Parallellezing - The Uses of Digital Video for Collaborative Teacher Reflection and Learning

Parallelsessie 5 Dinsdag 1 april van 13.30 uur tot 14.30 uur, Parkzaal.
This talk will explore the theoretical foundations and practical applications of teacherproduced
video as a tool for teacher refl ection in teacher education and professional
development. The interest in video in teacher education has rapidly increased over
the last ten years with affordable and powerful video editing hardware and software.
Video allows for the documentation of rich, complex, situated teaching and learning
situations. Video allows for a common experience of a lesson so teachers can discuss
concrete observations rather than recollections of a lesson. By allowing teachers to
see the classroom from different perspectives, video provides excellent subject matter
for engaging in shared observation and collective refl ection. Digital video allows even
greater possibilities. When capturing video onto a computer, teachers can slow down
classroom action and refl ect systematically by viewing lessons multiple times.
Through video editing technology, they can choose how to represent their teaching
so it can promote conversations about teaching among colleagues. Edited digital
videos allow for quick access so they can easily be viewed and reviewed. Although
there are many commercially produced video cases of teaching, this talk will focus
instead on the equipment, decisions, and processes involved in the creation and
sharing of teacher-produced videos—from gaining consent, choosing a focus, videotaping
in the classroom, editing the video, and sharing the fi nished products. Recent
developments in these areas will be highlighted.
